Starhotels Splendid Venice Hotel Review

pro1
Venice is one of our favourite cities in the world. The romance of its beautiful streets and canals is enhanced by its friendly locals and great food. You can see our five must-dos in Venice here. So it’s only natural for us to share with you our favourite Venice hotel, Starhotels Splendid Venice.

Guest rooms
Many of the hotel rooms in Venice, although grand, are extremely dated. As a fan of luxury and modern design, the Starhotels Splendid Venice is the perfect fit for us. The recently renovated rooms combine the grandeur and beauty of Venetian styling with modern and clean touches. Many of the rooms also feature views of the peaceful back canals. It is definitely worth paying to upgrade to a view room, as the best way to spend afternoon sipping tea is while watching the Venetian locals and tourists explore the canal below. The hotel features free WIFI (a great benefit to every modern day traveller), the ultra luxurious “Starbed”, the “Pillowmania” pillow menu, and 24-hour room service, so your every need is catered for.

Facilities
Starhotels Splendid features La Maschere restaurant, which serves up delicious and authentic Venetian cuisine (you can find our review here soon), the Canal View Bar, the Altana Rootop Terrace, and a full library. The facilities are beautiful and homely making every stay comfortable and inviting.

Location
Starhotels Splendid has the BEST location in Venice. On arrival, the hotel is easily accessible from their private landing stage via gondola or water taxi, or by foot from San Marco Square. Overlooking the alleyways of the famous Mercerie shopping street and only a mere five minute walk, through alleyways filled with quaint shops, from San Marco square, makes the Starhotels Splendid Venice the best located hotel in Venice!

Overall
The Starhotels Splendid Venice has the whole package, from beautiful and comfortable guest rooms to an unbeatable location to a great restaurant that serves up some of the best food in Venice! We highly recommend it to every type of traveller and personally cannot wait to return.

Top 5 Macao Must-Dos

DSC07469
Macao is so much more than casinos. On our recent trip to Macau, we discovered some great activities for all those wanting to escape the smoke and noise of the casinos. Here are our top 5 must-dos in Macau.

1. Old City – Ruins and Senado Square
Macau shot to the top of our favourite places as soon as we explored the old city. The Portuguese influences on this now commercialized city give it a vibrancy and unique flavor unseen in other Asian cities. The monochrome mosaic pathways lit up by a backdrop of brightly multicoloured buildings make the whole city feel alive. Don’t miss Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul. http://www.macauheritage.net/en/default.aspx

2. Portuguese egg tarts
No visit to Macau is complete without trying a Portuguese egg tart. The traditional egg tart, made famous in Asia, has been given an even more delicious twist by the Portuguese, in the form of a flaky, buttery pastry casing and a flamed sugar top. The best place to get them? Lord Stow! Try the original or head to the Venetian for a classier affair. DSC07451

3. The House of Dancing Water
A 2 billion Hong Kong Dollar production that is sure to excite! This is a great show for all ages to see. Witness Cirque du Soleil-esque feats of circustry (our own made up word!) set around an amazing ocean-like set. http://thehouseofdancingwater.com/en/

4. AJ Hackett Bungee Jump
For thrill-seekers only, the AJ HackettBungee Jump is a must-do whilst in Macau. The experience is a bit expensive but we guarantee it will be a memory for a lifetime!

5. The Venetian

We can hear you all screaming that the Venetian IS A CASINO. But this must-do is on our list for the experience of a gondola ride or boutique shopping along the canals that flow through this iconic venue. It is like a trip to Venice without the expensive European price tag!

Top 5 Must-dos in Venice, Italy

DSC02202

Venice is one of our favourite places in the world. A city that can be explored by foot and by canal is definitely a winner. See below for our tried and tested tips on the top 5 Venice experiences.

  1. Take a Gondola ride

This is the quintessential Venice experience. On a clear day you will have the best views of the Grand Canal, the terracotta colours of the buildings, and a taste of Venetian daily life. Our tip is to walk the back streets of the canals to find private Gondoliers who will give you discounts and better value prices than the main booths you can catch them from.

2. Carnevale

We were extremely lucky to experience Carnevaledi Venezia in 2013. Carnevale signifies the end of Christian Lent and is the festival where the famed Venetian masks are worn. The otherwise quiet winter streets of Venice come alive with local Venetians wearing elaborate costumes and intricately hand crafted masks. It truly is a magical time to visit Venice.

3. Have a Bellini

Originating in Venice, this delicious combination of Prosecco, a sparkling white wine, and peach puree is a must try for any Venice visitor. This cocktail is infamous around the world, so why not try the original at its birthplace, Harry’s Bar!

4. Shop in the backstreets

One of the reasons why we love this city so much is the discoveries we have made while roaming the back streets and canals of Venice. Our favourite finds so far are the bookstore, which had a first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and a quaint shop selling prints of Venice and leather-bound notebooks. Shopping in Venice is a truly memorable experience.

5. Take a walking tour

The best way to see Venice is by joining a walking tour. Venice is beautiful by day and night so we recommend joining a ghost tour to see Venice by night whilst hearing about the history of Venice. This is a fun and memorable way to learn a bit about their rich history.
